Didier Drogba garnered 51% of the 40,094 votes cast on Ligue 1's official Twitter handle - The Ivorian saw off Morientes, Alexander Frei, Benzema and Pauleta to reach the finals of the contest - The 42-year-old played in the French top-flight in 2002, when he joined Guingamp from second-tier side
Le Mans Fans have voted former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba as Ligue 1's greatest forward of the last two decades, beating off stiff competition from Zlatan Ibrahimovich to the prestigious recognition. The Ivorian earned the recognition despite spending just three seasons in the French top-flight league.
The legendary striker plied his trade with Guingamp and Marseille who he joined in 2003 before he left a year later for Chelsea. During the period, he made 80 appearances for both teams, finding the back of the net 39 times. This is in complete contrast with Ibrahimovich's spectacular campaign with Paris Saint-Germain who he featured for 122 times in the league scoring 113 goals.
His prowess in front of goal helped the Parisians win four consecutive titles and eight domestic trophies during his stay. Be that as it may, fans still voted Drogba ahead of the Swede in a poll run on Ligue 1's official Twitter account. The pair had to see off huge competition earlier in the contest to reach its penultimate finals. Ibrahimovic beat Mario Balotelli, Alexandre Lacazette, Kylian Mbappe and former teammate Edinson Cavani to get to the final, with Drogba topping in votes against Fernando Morientes, Alexander Frei, Karim Benzema and Pauleta. An elated Drogba later took to his social media to thank fans for recognising him for his contribution in the French league. "Waaaw what recognition from the fans, thank you @EAGuingamp @OM_Officiel for allowing me to experience these incredible emotions," he tweeted. "Great respect to all strikers who have played in the French championship," he added. Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how former Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink is still clearly upset about the officiating during epic semi-final second-leg showdown between Chelsea and Barcelona at the 2008/2009 UEFA Champions League. The Blues were denied four possible penalties in a match many agree that the referee made quite a number of blunders which marred the game. Centre-referee of that game Tom Henning Ovrebo later admitted that he made series of blunders, but Hiddink who managed Chelsea at that time suggested that the game could have been fixed.
